New state-of-the-art 1.2m facility for historic Carrickfergus YMCA
One of the world's oldest YMCA groups today unveiled a new state-of-the-art 1.2million facility in Carrickfergus.

Established in 1873, Carrickfergus YMCA will mark its 140th birthday in a new purpose-built youth and community base which will increase its efforts to support youth development, employment and training and promote mutual understanding between all sections of the community.

The International Fund for Ireland provided 555,000 funding towards the three-storey development in the Irish Quarter of the town which includes activity rooms, a training kitchen, arts and crafts area, multi-purpose hall, office space, youth centre and coffee bar. Alongside that the Fund is supporting, to the tune of some 100,000, a programme of activity for young people to raise the profile of the new facility and get it off to a flying start.

The facility also houses a pregnancy resource centre, youth information point and a health hub one-stop-shop funded operated by the Public Health Agency.

Speaking at the event, Siobhan Fitzpatrick, International Fund for Ireland Board Member said:
"This is an exceptional facility that will enable Carrickfergus YMCA to increase its work with local groups and develop strategies to promote employment, regeneration and community integration. The YMCA's cross-community activities align with the Fund's objectives of delivering sustainable, long-term positive impacts that can transform communities and underpin peace building and reconciliation efforts."

"This development was supported through our Community Based Economic and Social Regeneration Programme and we have every confidence that it will prove to be a catalyst to improve communities and regeneration in the area. Since the inception of the Fund in 1986, it has contributed over 707 million to a wide variety of projects in Northern Ireland and the southern border counties."

Ivor Mitchell General Secretary Carrickfergus YMCA said:
"Carrickfergus YMCA is fully committed to building a better society where differences are respected and young people can realise their ambitions free of fear. This new facility will ensure we can provide more experiences and challenges that inspire all our users to meet their full potential - physically, mentally and spiritually. We very grateful to all our funders for making the regeneration of Carrickfergus YMCA possible. We look forward to working with our partners to make this step of faith bear fruit for many generations to come."

The International Fund for Ireland provided a total of 555,000 towards the construction and additional funding was made available by the Department of Education and Carrickfergus Borough Council through CAN PEACE III. Significant additional funding was also donated by charitable trusts, residents and local businesses in Carrickfergus.

The project was overseen by the Rural Development Council on behalf of the International Fund for Ireland.
