A little bit about Arlene...
Arlene works at the YMCA as a cookery school tutor and demonstrator. Her classes at Carrickfergus Cookery School currently providing training for young people on programmes to help them learn cooking skills, healthy eating, food safety, life skills and enjoy working as a team. The cookery school also provides training for parents and community groups.

Our new Scratch Cookery Classes, and Cook your own lunch classes have been developed to help provide extra funding for the work we do at Carrick YMCA and enable us to improve our services and provide cookery training to vulnerable young people.

Arlene has 15 years experience working as a Regional Community Food and Health Manager, for Sainsbury's where she received cooking and demonstration training sessions from Jamie Oliver and travelled all over the UK, with a passion to inspire people to cook.

Her career experiences also include:
  • Qualified NVQ tutor/assessor in the catering industry, with over 15 years experience teaching students of all ages and backgrounds

  • Programme manager of MEND programme for 2 years-an intensive healthy lifestyle programme for obese children and their parents, involving mind, exercise, nutrition and doing it!

  • Delivering "Feed me Better" programme in primary schools all over N Ireland, involving kids doing hands on cooking

  • Managing and delivering "Shop Local" project all over NI, in conjunction with local N Irish food suppliers, demonstrating recipes using quality local produce

  • Weekly recipe columnist in 5 local newspapers (current role)

  • Demonstrating at large food shows throughout the UK, at WI meetings and at a wide variety of community and woman's groups

Arlene's easy friendly manner and her passion for food and cooking is clearly evident to everyone who meets her. It is these special qualities, which make her cookery classes so inspirational and enjoyable!
